Botched WordPress

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 | Server Related

So, I just recently updated WordPress so that it would be compatible with my new iPod Touch. All of the sudden, I noticed that all off my categories were messed up. It looks as if there is a bug in the upgrade process. Now any sensible person makes backups before doing a WordPress upgrade. This is the first time I was lazy and decided not to be sensible. Argh! So here I am with 110+ posts and no category metadata. First, I start looking at the posts to see if I can piece the categories back together. That was impracticle. I then start looking for any old backup that I might have lying about on my hard drive. No go. Then the epiphany hits me! I use the Google Sitemap plugin so I should be Google cached. (Thank goodness for Google!) Sure enough, the cache had the list of categories on the side and the mouse over on the links revealed the category ID number! So I am back in business.

Of course all of this happens just before bed as I am on the phone with Betty and I am too stubborn to wait until a more convenient time to address the issue. I had to do it then and there. Luckily, Betty is very patient and understanding. (Thank you and sorry!)

Next time, more sensibility, a backup, less SQL, and less blowing off Betty.
